Safety disclaimer
In an emergency, call 911 and follow instructions from local officials, emergency managers, and public health authorities. Their instructions come first, ahead of anything on this site.
This site is a general preparedness reference. It summarizes public guidance from agencies such as FEMA, Ready.gov, the CDC, the FDA, and NOAA, and links to each source so you can read it yourself. It is not medical, legal, or professional advice, and it is not an emergency service.
Tools on this site
The targets calculator and the evacuation route planner use a public-source list of sites, Census ZIP code centroids, and Natural Earth road data. They are planning aids:
- The site list is an estimate drawn from public sources. Real targeting plans are classified.
- The route planner is an educational comparison, not a safety rating or an evacuation order. Its planning areas are the tool’s own settings (a chosen radius, a plume three times as long, an assumed wind), not official boundaries or a fallout forecast. Real fallout follows the winds on the day. Google Maps, if you open a route there, plans its own route and does not know about the planning areas.
- The route planner does not know traffic, damage, weather, or road closures.
On the day, use the fallout maps, shelter instructions, and evacuation routes officials publish.
Medical information
Information about potassium iodide and other medical topics quotes the FDA and CDC. Take potassium iodide only when public health or emergency officials tell you to. Ask a doctor or pharmacist about your own situation, and call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 if you think someone has taken too much of a medicine.
